Influenced by the Reform Movement of Lithuania, Biržai people from all over Lithuania gathered for a two-day congress in Biržai in September 1989. The resolution of the congress stated: to establish contacts with the Lithuanians in exile.
All fears were pushed aside, and the emigrants from Biržai started to return to Biržai Region Museum "Sėla" in their works: books, paintings, sculptures, collections of coins and medals, souvenirs (sometimes very unexpected, e.g. the coat of arms of Lithuania or Vytis with the face of a famous Hollywood actor Chuck Norris).
Parcels came one after another from the beyond Atlantic... It sounds magical that this happened even before 1989.
At that time when all the clothes in the shops were dull grey and all the same, many families were waiting for magic packets from the beyond Atlantic which were full of dresses, colourful fabrics, shawls and beautiful scarves. There one could even find the most real jeans and show off in front of their teenage mates.
